What is a Seizure?
A seizure is an abnormal, and irregular electrical discharge that occurs within the brain’s cortical area which consists of gray matter. These unregulated signals, interrupt normal brain function and alters one’s awareness.
Seizures also cause patients to feel abnormal sensations throughout their body, cause involuntary movement, involuntary contractions of the muscles and much more.
How Do You Test For A Seizure Disorder?
In order to correctly access if you indeed have suffered a seizure and not another condition, you must undergo laboratory testing, neuroimaging, and an Electroencephalogram (EEG). An EEG is a test that searches for abnormalities in your brain waves, or in the electrical activity of your brain.
Common Seizure Disorders
Epileptic Seizure Disorder
Epilepsy can be described as a chronic brain disorder which causes consistent seizures (typically every within every 24 hours) and occur without reason or stressors.
These types of seizures are triggered by a stressor or temporary disorder. With small kids, sometimes a seizure can occur due to having a very high fever ( a type of stressor).
If a patient currently suffers from a psychiatric disorder, at times, their condition can result in a seizure-like occurrence. All of the contractions can occur, but there is no actual electrical discharge occurring.
This type of seizure can be frustrating to patients as the seizures have been found to be caused due to a trigger, but that stressor has not yet be found.
When the cause of the epileptic seizure is known (such as stroke or a brain tumor), doctors call this symptomatic seizure.
This rare type of disorder is caused by a known trigger such as flashing lights, video games, or repetitive sounds to name a few.
